HELPFUL HINTS FOR CANDIDATES

A good CV should be:

* Preferably two sides of A4 in length – three maximum in reverse chronological order except for professional qualifications and degree/HND (only these two).
* Concentrate on the last 5 – 10 years or most recent experience.
* Split text between duties/responsibilities and achievements.
* Make it achievement orientated.
* Use bullet points, headings and embolden titles etc.
* Keep it short, sharp and succinct.

COVERING LETTERS:

Then all you need is a good covering/marketing letter.  Remember if you apply to an advertisement, you will probably be one of hundreds of CVs.  At least 50% of the response will be irrelevant and another 25% - 40% will not have a decent covering/marketing letter.  You can therefore increase your chances of an interview dramatically, provided you apply for relevant vacancies by following these suggestions ie:

* Pick out three or four major factors (preferably of benefit to the employer) or reasons why you are applying for the post.
* Ensure that the same factors/reasons appear in the body of your CV.
* Use bullet points in the letter.
* Be assertive and positive about getting the interview.

PERSONAL NETWORKING:

Statistics show the majority of middle and senior managers change job via personal contact or recommendation.  Therefore, the best method of coming up with alternative opportunities is to contact people to whom you are a known quantity, eg ex bosses, old colleagues, friends and acquaintances and alert them to the fact that you are looking for a new challenge.  DO NOT ASK THEM FOR A JOB but request that they contact you if they see or hear of any positions that they think may be of interest to you.  Endeavour to obtain two further referrals of people who you could contact.  Make a list of the people you speak to and you will be pleasantly surprised at how long it becomes.  An answer machine that takes messages on your home number will also prove to be a useful asset.
